In Fall 2023, the Western District introduced the Connections Grant to support student chapter activities that foster relationships with other organizations and help to attract, retain, and develop talented students interested in a career in transportation. These activities are key to developing long term, mutually beneficial relationships with other organizations.

Recently, USC’s student chapter utilized Connections Grant dollars for a collaborative day-long event with student chapters from Cal and UC Davis. The day commenced at a popular local sandwich shop in Berkeley, CA. Students connected on strategies for running student chapters, discussing topics such as chapter management, recruitment tactics, event organization, and inter-chapter cooperation.

Kai Vincent, the student chapter’s outgoing president, shared the benefits of providing time for these types of conversations to grow organically, “Initially, many of the conversations focused on chapter organization-related subjects… It was valuable to share best practices with each other. As the day went on, the conversations shifted towards personal matters… Many of us are all facing the same challenges and opportunities, so it is great to connect and enjoy time together.”

Later, the group explored Moe’s Bookstore, congregating in the urban development and transportation aisles. Post-lunch cravings led them to indulge in Belgian waffles before proceeding to Twin Peaks to marvel at the breathtaking cityscape. The day continued with a journey via MUNI bus and light rail to Chinatown for another communal meal. The evening concluded with an exploratory stroll through downtown.

Additionally, as part of the trip students were able to visit with public agencies and private firms, including the Port of Oakland.

Kai considered the event a triumph, “We had the perfect amount of attendees, and logistics were fairly simple. The next iteration of this event would hopefully bring together even more students and perhaps local professionals as well in a mixer environment to facilitate even more connections, especially on a career level.”

Student chapter events like this are invaluable, strengthening student chapters through knowledge sharing and building connections that may last entire careers. Given it’s importance, the Western District is excited to see more student chapters take on the initiative in planning such events. Dr. Shen, the student chapter’s faculty advisor, shared his insights on initiating joint events, “Simply reach out and brainstorm ideas! Just look at the success of every ITE Student Leadership Summit – having the professionals provide resources and mental support, I am confident that students will plan out fun activities and build relationships.”
