President’s Message

Thank you for attending the Joint District Annual Meeting! We had 606 registrants, 17 exhibitors, and the ability to help fund our future meetings. We are happy that we could provide meaningful technical programming to our members with most sessions have 200+ people in attendance. Please note that PDH credits are available for registrants with more information here:

It was great to have so many of you tune in to celebrate our award winners! Congratulations to all our Award Winners! For our Section Boards, please take a few minutes at your next Section meeting to recognize your Section members and your Section for the District recognition:

Our Lifetime Achievement Awards are the highest honor the District can give to a member and we were honored to recognize John Fisher and Ken Ackeret for their contributions to the organization and the industry. Our Public Relations Committee puts together great videos for these awards, please share them: and

We also held our Annual Business Meeting virtually. ITE is successful because of our members and we remember those members that we have lost this past year:

  • Bill Law
  • Donald W. Barker
  • Albert L. Grover
  • Jerome W. Hall
  • Robert F. MacDonald
  • Judson S. Matthias
  • James A. Willhite

We provided a State of the District update and I will highlight a few items here. We have worked through the OneITE process and have updated our District charter and bylaws. We should have the final Section charters and bylaws by the end of summer. Our Student Endowment Fund is doing well and is currently at $445,000. Thank you to all our members for their continued support of our students. As a reminder, our next Annual Meeting will be a joint meeting with ITE International in Portland. Which will be followed by Palm Springs in 2022, Fresno in 2023, Sacramento in 2024, Long Beach in 2025, Seattle in 2026, San Diego in 2027, a joint meeting in 2028 with a location TBD, and San Francisco Bay Area in 2029. Yes, we at the Western District do like to plan ahead.

Our Secretary-Treasurer, Joe de la Garza, provided an update on our FY 2019/2020 year-to-date budget and our proposed budget for FY 2020/2021. We have completed the splitting of funds with the Mountain District and are maintaining our reserve goals for 1.5 times our operating budget. We are closely watching our sponsorship/advertising revenues and are working to re-structure this program. We are still working through the final expenses of this FY and the Annual Meeting but will end the year in the positive. For FY 2020/2021, we cannot fully anticipate the impacts of COVID-19 but are making adjustments to our revenues as best as we can. We have a balanced budget and will be keeping a close eye on revenues and expenditures.

We recognized our wonderful chairs for serving and also for this hard work adapting to the changes this year. Thank you to our chairs:

  • Career Guidance Committee Chair: Josh McNeill
  • District LAC Committee Chair: Cathy Leong
  • Public Relations Committee Chair: Paul Stanis
  • Student Funding & Initiatives Committee Chair: Kimberly Leung
  • Technical Committee Chair: Amit Kothari

A Presidential Proclamation was given to the 2020 Hawaii Meeting LAC to recognize their hard work. We also recognized the Annual Meeting LAC Chair Cathy Leong for taking on this challenging meeting. Thank you to our hardworking LAC for planning and executing a great meeting!

Last but certainly not least, please congratulate your incoming 2021 Western District Officers:

  • Vice-President – Joe De La Garza
  • Secretary-Treasurer – Kimberly Leung
  • International Director – Mark Spencer

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve on the Western District Board for a second year as President. It has been an incredible learning experience. I did have the opportunity to thank many wonderful people and say my goodbyes during this Annual Meeting, but since I am around for another 6 months, I leave those remarks for my last President’s Message in December.
