President’s Message

It’s been a busy and rewarding year. We had two successful events at the Western District Student Leadership Summit hosted by UC Berkeley and the Western District Annual Meeting held in Monterey and hosted by the SF Bay Area and Central Coast Sections. We also had the opportunity to recognize a young member (Pat Marnell) and a classic member (Zaki Mustafa) for their contributions to ITE at our Annual Meeting.

The District was awarded the Communications Award, the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Student Chapter was awarded the Student Chapter Award, and the Southern California Section was awarded the Section/Chapter Activities Award at the ITE International Meeting in Austin.

We are looking forward to the many activities happening in 2020. As of January 1, 2020, the Western District will have its new borders and the Mountain District will officially come into existence. We will have our first Western District Board meeting with our new Section Representatives at the Midyear Board Meeting on January 31st. We also have some changes coming to our District awards this year to sync up with changes happening for awards at the International level. We will be changing the requirements for some awards and adding a couple awards. Please be on the look out for more communication on this as changes are expected to the Section/Chapter and Student Chapter awards. To our Section Representatives and Section Officers, we look forward to working with you through the new charter and bylaws process with you and will our best to make it an easy process for you.

Thank you to everyone who submitted abstracts for our 2020 Joint District Annual Meeting in Hawaii. We received over 200 abstracts and have closed the submission window. Our technical committee will be able to put together a great program with the abstracts we have received! Please register for the meeting and start making your travel arrangements. You should also make your plans to attend the Student Leadership Summit to be hosted by UCLA and USC (

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers for all the time and effort you’ve put in for the Western District, into your home Sections/Chapters and into our incredible Student Chapters.

Wishing all our members and your loved ones a very happy holiday season!
