Living in Cedar Rapids:
I grew up in Maine and I didn’t particularly want to leave, but the economy was devastated by closing paper mills and as a new graduate I simply couldn’t find suitable work. So I moved up and down the east coast. I lived in some pretty big cities like Miami, Atlanta and Richmond, all of which offered me great employment opportunities. But when I had my children and I started considering other things.
I remember the day I took my kids to the local park in Virginia. My son found a cigarette butt and a beer cap – both of which he licked (that boy would put anything in his mouth). I started to miss the small town pride. I wanted my kids to experience what I did growing up, neighbors who said hello and strangers who stopped to help you fix a flat tire.
There had to be a place where I could have a satisfying work life and a safe environment for my kids. So I sat down and started doing some research. I looked at air and water quality, cost of services like electricity and gas, the price of homes, the quality of the public school and healthcare and (of course after living in Atlanta) commute times.
I was shocked by what I found – Cedar Rapids was way ahead of the pack, so we moved. I bought my three bedroom home for $85,000. The same house in Maine would have been around $150,000 in Atlanta $250,000 easily. Now I have parks in every direction from my house and so far we haven’t tasted anything worse than a stick!
We’ve been here 3 years now and I love it. It’s this perfect mix of country values and city conveniences.
